When did the Ib chemistry syllabus change? Dear students and Teachers, are you ready for a big change to the International Baccalaureate Chemistry curriculum coming in 2023? This new curriculum will have a revised structure and syllabus design, with the main topics now organized into five distinct units focusing on the five key themes of chemistry. These themes are Structure, Properties and Transformations of Matter; Physics of Chemistry; Chemical Reactions; Laboratory Skills, Safety & Measurement; and Global Impact in Chemistry. Each unit will help you develop your knowledge, skills, and appreciation for the interdisciplinary nature of chemistry. When did the Ib chemistry syllabus change?
As for the duration of the course, it remains the same for both SL and HL. For SL, you will have 150 hours of instruction, with 110 hours dedicated to theory and 40 hours for practicals. The assessment for SL will consist of 80% External exam and 20% Scientific investigation(Internal Assessment). The weightage for Paper 1 is 36% and Paper 2 is 44%.
For HL, you will have 240 hours of instruction, with 180 hours dedicated to theory and 60 hours for practicals. The assessment for HL will also consist of 80% External exam and 20% Scientific investigation(Internal Assessment). The weightage for Paper 1 is 36% and Paper 2 is 44%.
In terms of the specific topics, you will be studying models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, classification of matter, reactivity, experimental programme and practical work. And, similar to the IA, the scientific investigation will be a process of collecting and evaluating data, evidence, and information with the purpose of answering an open-ended research question. So now?
So, get ready to dive into the new IB DP Chemistry Curriculum in 2023.
